Your Top 3 Oil Change Questions Answered

Buick GMC Service Gurnee, IL

There’s so much information (and misinformation) floating around concerning oil changes that our Buick service center in Gurnee, IL thought it was finally time to set the record straight. When should you change your oil? How often should you change your oil? What’s the best oil for your car? Anthony Buick GMC is here with all the answers.
  1. When should you change your oil?
GMC auto service centers get this question all the time. Unfortunately, we can’t give you an exact answer but we can tell you where to find the answer: Simply check your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Don’t make assumptions about oil change intervals based on previous experiences with other cars or guidance from mechanics who might profit from unnecessary oil changes. Many Buick models for sale today (as well as other pickups, sedans and SUVs from other brands) have service reminder monitors that will pop up and notify you that it’s time to change your oil. When in doubt, always just check your manual.
  1. How often should you check your oil level?
Check your vehicle’s oil level at least once a month. Your vehicle’s owner’s manual will tell you whether your car has an electronic oil monitor or if you need to check your levels with the traditional dipstick. If you need to use the dipstick method, be sure that your car is parked on level ground and that your vehicle’s engine is completely turned off. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any oil off from its end. Next, re-insert the dipstick into its tube and push it all the way in before removing it once again to determine the oil level. There should be some sort of marking (the letters L and H for “low” and “high” or the words MIN and MAX are common) to help you check to see if the oil is below the minimum mark. Don’t forget to pay attention to the oil’s color too! It should be brown or black without any sort of milky appearance. If you notice a light, milky sheen to the oil it could be an indicator that your coolant is leaking into the engine.
  1. How often should you change your oil?
Most vehicles need an oil change every 7,500 miles or so. A good rule of thumb is to get your oil changed every six months. Gurnee Buick service providers recommend only using regular oil in your vehicle unless the owner’s manual specifically states that the engine requires synthetic oil. Still have questions?
