Despite its century-long status as a top contender in the automotive world, GMC has never gotten the recognition for its trucks that Chevrolet has. But thanks to show-stopping GMC vehicle sales, the GMC brand is finally getting its moment in the sun. You may know that GMC builds the best trucks in the business but we’re willing to bet that there’s a lot about the brand that you don’t know. Here are our favorite 4 facts about the GMC brand:
- GMC has a fascinatingly rich history.
The brand was founded by the Grabowsky brothers in Detroit in 1902. The two brothers started out by building a simple two-cylinder delivery truck. During WWII, GMC built almost 584,000 military vehicles, including 430,000 6x6 2.5-ton Army trucks and 26,000 6x6 amphibious Ducks. The small business grew to become the second-biggest brand in the U.S. behind Chevrolet and is now the third largest in the world. In 2016, GMC sold 700,000 vehicles in 12 countries–a far cry from the automaker’s humble beginnings.
- GMC has always been ahead of the curve.
Forever on the frontlines of American innovation, GMC was one of the first automakers to develop an EV vehicle. The brand built battery-powered electric trucks that were capable of hauling up to 6 tons in 1912. In 1931, GMC gained notoriety for using Detroit Diesel engines.
- GMC has been adapting and evolving since the very beginning.
When the brand was founded, it was originally called Rapid Motor Vehicle Co. A second company was developed by the brothers called Reliance Motor Co. and the two companies were merged in 1909 when they were purchased by General Motors. The newly formed company was called General Motors Truck Co. and its first “GMC Trucks
” logo appeared in 1911. The company transformed once again in 1913 when it finally officially changed its name to GMC.
- SUVs are at the heart of the GMC brand today.
Although they’re famous for their trucks, the SUV is truly king at GMC. The Denali accounts for over 29 percent of GMC sales. Since 1999, the automaker has sold over one million Denalis. If you’ve ever wondered why most GMC advertising features the Denali–now you know.
