The all-new 2018 GMC Terrain
is set to launch late this summer, but the buzz about the Terrain’s redesign is already turning heads as the first reports begin rolling in. As an overview, GMC first launched the Terrain
in 2009, and it’s being repositioned in the maker’s lineup as a small SUV. GMC unveiled this all-new Terrain at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, where it prompted a lot of early verdicts.
Not like the others
“The Terrain does it right in the dog-eat-ute compact segment,” said Henry Payne of The Detroit News. “Shedding nearly 500 pounds, the turbo-4 powered Terrain should ride as good as it looks.”
In fact, the 2018 Terrain’s sculpted body is what caused most of the chatter, with writers picking up on the SUV’s sloped hood and C shaped head- and tail-lights.
“Both the standard three-bar design on the base model and the toothy, chromed-clad version on the Denali trim are rounded hexagons and a far departure from the straight-edge rectangular grilles of Terrains past,” said Kyle Campbell for New York Daily News. “This isn’t to say the new Terrain is overdesigned or ‘bubble-gummy.’ To the contrary, it retains a stylish and domineering presence—especially in profile—it’s just much different from anything GMC has put out before.”
Just what the segment ordered
By these reports, the 2018 Terrain is ready to step into the ring and battle it out with others in its class. Alexander Stoklosa of Car and Driver was particularly praiseful of the model, calling it in better “alignment” with the rest of the compact-crossover class than Chevrolet.
“With turbocharged engines, a right-size footprint and a subtly upscale design, the GMC is ungainly no longer,” said Stoklosa. “Its evolution comes at the perfect time, as the segment grows ever more competitive and compact crossovers continue to print money for their makers.”
