Buick has once again proven that it’s one of the most innovative automakers on the scene today thanks to its new active hood system technology. Available soon on the 2018 Buick Regal (including the Sportback and TourX wagon variations), the active hood system is a new safety feature that helps keep pedestrians safer. Here’s how it works:
Officially known as the Active Hood Safety System, the new safety component works by sensing the impact of a pedestrian while the vehicle is going between 16 and 30 mph. Once the system recognizes that a pedestrian may be in danger of colliding with the vehicle, a pyrotechnic actuator springs into action to lift the back of the vehicle’s hood up about 4 inches. The mechanism reduces the potential for injury by lessening the overall impact to the pedestrian.
If you were to carefully inspect the new Buick models for sale, you’d find the Active Hood system’s sensors hidden behind the vehicles’ grilles to detect pedestrians walking in front of the car. If a pedestrian is detected, the lifting technology helps make the angle of impact less drastic. Overall, it should help put pedestrian (and driver) minds at ease.
Though it might sound odd some, Buick dealers in Gurnee, IL are extremely excited to see this technology make its way into North American vehicles after its huge success in Europe. Mercedes-Benz utilizes an active bonnet system with similar functionality in its European vehicles. Tesla uses it too and even Hyundai has recently caught on.
In fact, we’d be surprised if the Active Hood Safety System doesn’t become standard across all new vehicles within the next few years. After all, that’s how electronic stability control, anti-lock brake systems and even automatic emergency braking started proliferating the automotive market.
But the 2018 Buick Regal Sportback and TourX wagon have much more to offer than just the addition of groundbreaking safety technology. Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC broke the new Regal’s appeal down better than anyone else in a recent statement to reporters: “The new Regal Sportback was developed with today’s active, independent, premium car customer in mind,” he said.
The new 2018 Buick Regal vehicles come equipped with an OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot and four years of the OnStar Basic Plan so that you’ll never find yourself stuck in a tight spot without help ever again. The vehicle also comes with OnStar Smart Driver, an opt-in service designed to help Buick drivers maximize their vehicle’s overall performance. Plus, all Regal models are outfitted with a 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility with optional turn-by-turn navigation.
